Discussions In Slash 2.x

posted by Krow on 07:47 AM January 3rd, 2002   Printer-friendly   Email story
I'm wondering what is going on with the comments in Slash 2.x. As you can see on slash code, you can start a discussion, but how does one find the discussion after you start it? Is this part of the code not done?

I'd like to see something with the discussions where anyone can start one, and if it's good, you can moderate it to show up on the main page.....

  • The discussion system has always allowed users to make their own discussions, the only thing was that it was a bit of an accidental hack that was exploited then anything else (bug becomes feature) and evolved that way.
Now its been made a bit easier.
Somewhere in the back of my head is a new page for displaying the user created discussions. I had not thought yet of using some sort of ranking system for it, but that is not a bad idea....
I will add something to the code for users who want to make more use of this. Watch Slashcode's navigation menu for more changes :)

    • Is there a discussion type of 'nevercache' so that a discussion can be marked as perpetually open forever?

I *really* need to update from CVS and get back into the swing of things...

ok, so i noticed the discussion creation form in the discussions section. i was able to successfully (or so it appeared) create a discussion, but when i tried to post to it, i got all kinds of errors (something about an invalid formkey...the page expired so i can't get it back). i assume this means you're still working on it? :)

      • Where did you do this? On slashcode.com?

User created discussions have been supported since 2.2.

yes. here [slashcode.com]. try posting to it...something is definitely borked.

          • That's not the right way to create a discussion... You should have been given a Sid at the time, that looks like what you named the sid. Not the same thing.

            • Exchaning sid for title will work at some point BTW. Its in my list. It will probably work something like:

              1) You get the exact match

              2) You get a list of close matches

              • Cool! Will there be something that checks for name collisions? I was able to create two discussions with the same name on geekizoid (there are two trolltalk sids).

            • er, yeah...the sid was 1119. i thought i remembered trying to submit a comment using the sid instead of the name and it not working. </end-user whine> but i just tried it a second ago and it worked, so i must have screwed up the first time...

              woops :)
