Free slash-forum servers ?

posted by Krow on 01:43 PM December 6th, 2001   Printer-friendly   Email story
Anonymous Coward writes "I would like to set up a slashcode based discussion forum for my favorite football team . Are there any free servers where you can do that (I mean, sign up, create a forum, and be the administrator of it)?. I tried hard in google with no luck :-( . Thanx !"
That would be fun to do for someone as a project, not terribly hard.

Have you looked at zopesite.com? I believe they host zope sites for free and you could use Squishdot. http://www.zopesite.com/ and http://www.squishdot.org/

You can get a cable or DSL modem and set up a box the is running Apachie and Slashcode. this is what I have done. To make sure that the webadress is always the same I use a dinamic DNS service http://www.dyndns.org [dyndns.org]
  • It's hard to find free slash sites, due to the rescourse intensitivity of slash and numerous other reasons. Slash is installed through a shell, this shell needs to have cpan access which is restricted to root (maybe superuser?). If you are going to get root on a server, it's not going to be free. I believe slash also runs off of a daemon process, this means (once again) you have to have higher level access privelages to add a cronjob. Frankly, it's practically impossible to get a free host for a slash site.

Your best bet is to go to one of the numerous "slash hosts" which already run the slash daemon and are cheaper than getting a dedicated or colocated server.

A list of some of these hosts is:

    yoderdev.com [yoderdev.com]
    slashhosting.com [slashhosting.com]
    slashmotel.com/ [slashmotel.com]
    www.4am-media.com/ [4am-media.com]
    openflows.org [openflows.org]

That's all I can think of.
