In case anyone stumbles upon this looking for help.

It turns out that the old apache install was causing the problems. The header files were messing up the new install.

To get it to work I (first backed up) and then nuked the /usr/lib/apache folder that was previously installed. I also had to nuke some perl files. /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1/i386-linux/auto/Apa che /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1/i386-linux/auto/lib apreq /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1/i386-linux/Apache

After doing the last one, I had to re-install the perl modules from CPAN. Bundle::Apache.

I noticed the error using this website
    http://thingy.kcilink.com/modperlguide/in stall/

    It recommended removing /usr/local/include/ap_mmn.h

That didn't quite do it as I would

    make test (no errors)
    make install
    make test (lots of errors)

After nuking all the directories it then worked.

The error I was getting was in my error log.

[notice] child pid 23826 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)

Thanks for those who game advice.
