Karma Bonus

posted by Krow on 07:12 PM January 17th, 2003   Printer-friendly   Email story
Slash used to allow users with good karma to have a +1 assigned to new comments they were creating (so it would increment the value of comment at creation).

The way this is done was changed recently (like say on Wednesday).

What happens now is that the comment is logged with a value of "yes" for karma_bonus. A user can adjust the value for what this bonus means (by default it is +1). When you look on you own page you see the raw score, which is 1.

We have been getting rid of the +1/-1 and such type bonuses and going to a system where the user can decide what they want to apply for a bonus.

  • This change seems like a good idea. I never got into the whole karma thing, until I started actually running slash sites.

Here's a question - has anyone written any code or designed anything slash-related that is based on karma - besides the comment system?

I'm not sure exactly how to describe this - but it'd be a system where the user's get something in return for a point from their karma.

A possible example of something like this is a file downloads section.

The goal of a karma-use section would be good p

  • Thou, when you view your past messages, and someone marks you down as overrated, your score is now shown as 0. Which really is a +1.

I use karma as a filter, not a club. But people seem to be clubbing down +2 posts, instead of moding +1/0 info/inter/insightful posts.

You need to be a little thick skinned, as with all the anti-american posts on slashdot, and you respond, and you get marked down as a troll. And AntiAmerican posts get +1 insightful, then modded +1 insightful.

Looks like the Karma+Mod system still needs work. Thou I do see the need to offer karma users some intangible object. (Hey, im starting to feel like im in Marketing...)

  • I'd still like the bonus to be OFF as the default setting. Most of the time I try not to use it (as too many moderators club me for forgetting to click the box) so it makes more sense to be off.

Better yet, if the bonus is now user-definable, make it a text-entry box rather than a checkbox. Default it to 0 (or whatever the user has chosen as his default) so that it is changeable on a post-by-post basis.

    • You know that you can go to /my/comments and disable it by default right?

You can't grep a dead tree.
      • Doh... I haven't looked around in my preferences for awhile. I guess I thought hanging out around here would keep me apprised of new Slash features.

OK, unrelated question for you (since I couldn't find a way to submit it at sourceforge): why can't I post a character entity reference any more? I used to use the smiley (#9786) a lot, but now Slashdot encodes the leading ampersand and it disappears.
