Brace For Impact

Those of you following CVS closely: don't do incautious updates in the near future. We're going to be committing a large chunk of code all at once, very soon now, and we guarantee it will break your site if you install it. Bear with us while we get everything up to speed. In a couple of weeks everything will be humming along smoothly. (We're overhauling the section and topic system, replacing it with something more flexible.)

New R_ tag: 151

Last night we sprinkled a trace amount of holy penguin pee on the CVS tag T_2_3_0_151 and pronounced it to also be our latest R_ tag, R_2_3_0_151. This is the latest R_ tag since _113, which was many weeks ago. (If you missed the memo, "T" is for testing and "R" is for releases. We still haven't dubbed anything "Slash 2.3.0" yet, but that's mostly because we're lazy.) We feel pretty good about the stability of _151, it's been running on Slashdot for a couple of weeks and there are no real problems. The big change, committed shortly after _151, is the switch from users.pl to login.pl for authentication and related operations. That seems to be working but it hasn't been tested enough to merit an R_ yet. In fact, this may be the last R_ tag that we do for a while, since there are big changes that will be committed in the weeks to come which will put the damper on R'ing. Here's the CVS tree if you want to browse, and here are the instructions to download: $ cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/slashcode loginCVS password: (hit return, there is no password)$ cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/slashcode co slash(much activity)$ cd slash$ cvs update -r R_2_3_0_151 -dP

Slash with Mac OS X 10.3

The ever prolific tf23 points out: "Lottadot has an article about getting Slash and Mac OS X 10.3 up and running." There was a previous story on Installing Slash with the previous Mac OS X release. Those interested in installing it on their Desktop Macs (or PowerBooks) might be interested in giving them a look.

The article, while brief, discusses quite a bit of the software that Slash uses. If you've never looked into "tuning" apache, or even MySQL, this could be a good read for you."

A Patch for Slashcode and Apache 2.0

Feather^2 writes: "Here is my patch to make Slashcode work under Apache 2+mod_perl 1.99. Lots and lots of little changes were neccessary, mostly focusing on the differenecs between mod_perl v1 and mod_perl v2 module configuration, environmnet variables, and POST data. The Hempology 101 Website has been running for over two months on this code with no problems, so I thought it was time to share it with the world. :)" Please note that Apache2+mod_perl is still not quite ready for prime_time, but if you are interested in playing around with the combination, I'm sure others would be interested in hearing your experiences.

Latin Characters in Slash?

latin-1 asks: "Hi, I run a Portuguese Slash site. So far, I have been unable to get Portuguese characters, like '&aacute', 'õ', right in the site. I'm using charset ISO-8859-1 in Slash. When I submit a story with words with Portuguese characters, they get mangled. This shouldn't be happening, especially since MySQL is Latin-1. If I go to MySQL and replaced the mangled characters with the right ones, then they appear correctly in the site. It seems that somehow, something is converting the Portuguese characters to mangled ones before they enter in MySQL. What can it be and how to solve this problem? You can go to the site and post anonymously to test. Any help would be much appreciated. I'm running Red Hat 9 and Slash 2.2.6. Thank you for your time and patience." First off, making sure you are using the right input and output character encodings is important. For those of you with working Slash sites with non-English characters, what did you have to do to get things to display and input properly, without character mangling? Have you been finding that, even with the right encodings, Slash is still mangling your characters? If so, what experiences have you had?

Slash on Mac OS X

This is how I installed Slash on Mac OS X Server 10.2.6 on August 8, 2003. YMMV. This is not intended to be a tutorial, it is a log of what I did for my system. You may wish to use a release version of perl, to include different Apache modules, to compile with DSO, etc. Whatever. If someone wants to take some or all of this information and include it in a more comprehensive guide, be my guest.

So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish!

All things come to an end and its been a wonderful ride. Today is my last day at OSDN and this will be the last thing I will be posting on Slashcode. It has been fun working on Slash for the last few years and I have enjoyed working with the Slash community (tf32, ACS, vladinator, ericdano, and many more that I am forgetting). On Monday I start work for MySQL so I will be a bit busy for a while but I expect you will still see Slash stuff coming from me in the future. I will continue to be in #slash for a while, and you can still always reach me via email. The best of luck with you and your sites, it has been great!

It has been hard, but after playing a little with all the configuration, we have reached a good balance in Barrapunto.com and now our users are very happy, the journals start to be filled with contents and the editors now are more active. We feel that the key was to serve the images from a differente machine, something that points to saturation in the connections for our main machine. Now the performance is very good with 70.000 pages/day and a PIII with 1 GB RAM with Slash and MySQL and a simple PC serving the images.

Shouldn't Slash Be Represented at OSCOM 3?

I found out that OSCOM 3, The Open Source Content Management Conference, is taking place in Cambridge, MA, from May 28-30. I was surprised to see that Slash does not appear to be represented in any way. I posted a story to CTDATA suggesting that our community try to represent itself in some fashion. If anyone wants to discuss how we can influence the organizers of this conference to include a Slash presentation, please email me at dave_aiello at ctdata.com.
