I did nothing more than just build the port and I think enable a VAR in the slash vars to enable ispell.

You beat me to it. Here's the detailed instructions for the guy:
Log in.
su to root, or do all of the following with sudo
cd
/usr/ports/textproc/ispell
make && make install
make clean
log out, and change the var in slashcode.

Thanks. For future users, let me just add that the thing that was hanging me up was that the var "ispell" must be set to the full pathname of ispell -- "/usr/local/bin/ispell" in my case, not just "ispell". Thanks for all the help!
