I believe translations should come as themes: this way everything can contained in a theme plus some ancillary plugins.
This is the direction I am taking for the Italian translation: a theme called slashcode-it as more similar as possible to the original slashcode. When you run install-slashsite you will then be able to choose between slashcode, slashcode-it, and possibly other themes.
Alessio, please post feedback on any difficulties achieving your translation plan as well as a gross estimate of the effort it takes: I may contrib a french version.

It's looong... much longer than expected. I've already done most of it for Bender, together with a friend of mine [biraghi.org]. But then, a lot of code has changed in Fry, and there are more plugins with more templates (for example Messages, a very welcomed plugin).
So, expect 20-30 hours of work, at least. I am doing it in small batches, so it's a little hard to keep record.
I suggest to use a CVS server to keep track of releases and all the changes that come from Slashcode. I hope to write soon a post with more details.
Thanks Alessio. I suspected this... I have downloaded the 2.1 tarball, I'll be working on that base w/out CVS.
I was wondering if changes should end up as a series of patches to the original Slashcode theme ??
Anyway, for this type of workload, don't expect delivery too soon: I'm doing this after hours.
Also, messenging is great! I was done browsing this site for the day, when I got a message in my mailbox. Way cool.
