Watch the line up top - slash will break it because it's too long, so there's bound to be a space at the end of the line. copy&paste it out into a browser window and remove the space from the url.

Would a shortened URL with a link anchor holding the original URL be better ?

When you are using URLs, you can merely wrap it in an <A HREF> and you won't need to worry about it.
