Installing UltraEdit in Ubuntu Linux (Hardy Heron)

08:56 AM
Linux
Just installing Ultraedit-32 version 14 on my Hardy Heron desktop using Wine. Notes:

1. Installer is an MSI installer, which means doing the standard 'wine ue_english.msi' doesn't work. Instead, you have to do "msiexec -i ue_english.msi".
2. setup dialog had a glitch with the installation text, very very minor.
3. Clicked through the yes-I-agree-to=license terms dialog, said click next, went in a circle. finally clicked on 'back' instead of 'next' and it kept going.
4. Said click finish button to exit installation, had a 'launch ultraedit' in dialog but no way to checkbox it or not. no biggie.
5. Started UE automatically. Cool enough. Now asking about file associations, all gneral, programming, etc. Not checking anything and saying 'dont' show this again.' since I'll do this from within UE or somewhere else.
6. dialog box said, 'want to check for updates?' I said no, but still started firefox and displayed page for IDM computer solutions (ue website). no biggie.
7. quick start guide dialog box presented on startup is silly since it's empty. Don't care. Ive been using UE for 10 years.
8. testing....
testing ...
9. dialog boxes for files work okay. can create folders and save files. Syntax highlighting good. no problems so far.
10. Column mode works, but there is a glitch when starting it. Apparently, Wine intercepts column mode toggle (Alt-C) and tries to show a pulldown. I think I can fix this with mapping column mode to another key combo as well, so transition is smooth. once in column mode, just fine. Minor inconvenience since col mode is still fully functional.
11. Rest of editing seems okay. Tried at length and so far looks good. More on this blog later.
